During the October 6, 2021 ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ Board of Education meeting, Canyon Crest 5th Grader, Matlida Vinuela, and Fontana High School Senior, Miranda Ordóñez were recognized by Supervisor Joe Baca Jr.'s office as "District 5 Academic Trailblazers". This award was given in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage month, to recognized high-achieving students for their academic and civic achievements.

Miranda is a high-achieving scholar at the top of her class, balancing Advanced Placement classes with clubs and activities such as the Girls & Guys for an Empowered Modern Society (GEMS) club, the California Scholarship Federation, manager for the wrestling team, and more.

Matilda came to the district not speaking any English. Despite being in unfamiliar surroundings, she immediately began to blend in as she listened, asked for help, and made friends quickly. Her teachers could not be more proud of her and the determination she has exhibited. Through her school’s growth mindset initiative, Matilda is a shining example of responding to a challenge with a positive attitude and resilience.
